Clearly, the 2018 model is greatly improved in regard to reliability, but it remains to be seen just how much better it is in real-world use. The non-cocooned 2017 keyboard was “almost immediately flooded” in the particles, unsurprisingly. iFixit placed some sand particles into the ‘danger zones’ of the keycaps, and confirmed the keys will break/become-unreliable when that happens, just like the second-generation butterfly keys. Naturally, dust can and will get through these holes over time. However, the silicone covers have to have holes in them to allow the keycap clips to attach. iFixit showered a 20 MacBook Pro in dust particles and then compared the result.Īs shown in the photo, the blue paint particles coat the outside of the keycaps and the edges of the membrane, but the silicone covers stop most of the particles from getting into the key mechanism - which is what causes the sticky key issues on the previous models. How well does the silicone membrane protect the butterfly mechanism? Pretty well. This is notably higher than the scores achieved by the MacBook Pro 2018 and 2017 MacBook.IFixit has followed up on its initial teardown with some focused testing on a the new third-generation keyboard present in the 2018 MacBook Pro. Having said that, due to non-upgradable RAM and storage and the hard-to-repair keyboard that is integrated into the top case, the team has given a repairability score of 3 out of 10 to the new MacBook Air.

"Featuring modular ports and pull-to-release adhesive, the new MacBook Air stands out against a trend of declining repairability in Apple's laptops," the iFixit team notes in its teardown coverage. This means the sensor can be replaced easily after removing the smaller audio board. Also, the Touch ID sensor on the new MacBook Air, which is one of its key highlights, comes as a modular - secured on the board with Torx screws. There is an ingress-resisting silicone covering on top of each keyboard switches. On the keyboard front, the iFixit team saw that the third-generation Butterfly keyboard on the MacBook Air 2018 is similar to the keyboard available on the recent MacBook Pro models. This restricts trackpad repairs to some extent as the logic board needs to be removed first to replace the trackpad. The newer MacBook Pro models have "first-step replaceable" trackpads, but the latest MacBook Air model has a trackpad with a cable shared with the keyboard, which is attached to the logic board. However, it is higher than what are powering the Microsoft Surface Laptop 2 and HP Spectre x360. The battery pack is 49.9Wh that is a bit lower than the new Dell XPS 13 that has a 52Wh battery. Also, there is a metal frame to make the battery pack easy removable with a single hand - after opening the screws and removing the adhesive strips. The iFixit engineers spotted four screws and six "friendly pull-to-remove adhesive strips" holding the battery pack on the device. Further, the battery pack is easier to remove over what's available on the latest MacBook Pro models. The team also found that all the ports and associated boards on the new MacBook model are easy replaceable since the available ports sit on their boards. However, it is touted to have a bunch of modular components that have easy access.Īs per the teardown coverage by iFixit, the lower case of the new MacBook Air provides access to its logic board, single fan, a pair of speakers, and the heat sink. The latest model hasn't received a remarkable repairability score majorly due to non-serviceable, non-upgradable storage and RAM. It has also been spotted that a "radiator-esque" heat sink is available alongside a lone fan to deliver a manage thermal dispense. The teardown highlights that the MacBook Air 2018 has a Butterfly-switch keyboard similar to the new MacBook Pro - with a thin silicone barrier to resist dust to some extent. While the new MacBook Air has just hit stores, folks at iFixit have come up with their teardown coverage to show the repairability of the new MacBook model.
